Malta prehistory and Temple tour

The prehistoric temples of Malta are unique in the world. They are the oldest free-standing temples in the world. They are older than Stonehenge and than the Pyramids. Because of their uniqueness and beauty, the major temple complexes are Unesco World Heritage sites.

Tarxien Temples

Our tour will start with a visit of the Tarxien temples. These are the largest temple complex in Malta, consisting of four temples, built between 3600 and 2500 B.C. Of particular interest at this temple site, is the rich stonework and decorative carvings, including domestic animals, spiral designs, altars and other patterns.

Ghar Dalam cave

We will later on drive to Ghar Dalam cave, which is a highly important site, as it was here that the earliest evidence of human settlement on Malta, some 7200 years ago, was discovered.

Remains of dwarf elephants and hippopotami were also found in this cave. These animals were trapped during the Ice Age, when the sea level went up and separated Malta from Sicily. These animal bones are an evident proof that Malta was once linked to Sicily and to mainland Europe by a landbridge.
